If you have been spending hundreds of dollars a month on supplements hoping to look younger, feel better, or lose weight faster, you are not alone. The supplement industry is worth over 150 billion dollars globally, and a huge chunk of that money goes toward products that do absolutely nothing for you.
Here are five popular supplements that science says you can stop buying today.
Collagen Supplements
The idea sounds great. Eat collagen, grow better skin. The problem is your body breaks collagen down into amino acids during digestion, just like any other protein. It does not simply redirect those amino acids back to your skin or joints. Most studies showing benefits were small, short term, and funded by the companies selling the product. You are better off eating enough protein and letting your body handle collagen production on its own.
Multivitamins
This is probably the most common supplement on the planet, and for most people, it is completely unnecessary. If you eat a reasonably balanced diet with fruits, vegetables, and protein, you are already getting what you need. Multiple large scale studies, including one published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, found that daily multivitamins did not reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, or cognitive decline. You are essentially paying for expensive urine.
Fat Burners
These products promise to boost your metabolism and melt fat while you sleep. In reality, most fat burners contain caffeine and a bunch of herbal extracts with zero proven fat loss benefits. The ones that do slightly raise your metabolism do so by such a tiny amount that it makes no real world difference. The only thing getting thinner is your wallet.
Detox and Cleanse Supplements
Your liver and kidneys are already doing this job 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for free. There is no credible scientific evidence that any supplement can detox your body better than your own organs. Most detox products just act as mild laxatives, which can actually mess with your gut health if used regularly.
Anti-Aging Supplements
From resveratrol to NMN to telomere boosters, the anti-aging supplement market is exploding. The truth is most of these compounds show interesting results in mice or in petri dishes, but human trials are either nonexistent or underwhelming. Companies take early stage research and market it as if the science is settled. It is not. Save your money until there is real human data to back up the claims.
What Should You Do Instead
Rather than throwing money at trendy supplements, focus on the basics that actually work. Eat enough protein, get quality sleep, exercise regularly, and manage your stress. These boring habits will do more for your health and appearance than any pill ever will.
